In 1934 the scientists Karl Meyer and John W. Palmer extracted Hyaluronic Acid from eyes vitreous body and studied its properties. Since then this amazing substance has become famous and cosmetologists and medicals started to find out ways of keeping Hyaluronic Acid in tissues and its replenishment. Hyaluronic Acid has become the most popular skincare ingredient in variety of cosmetic procedures.
The secret of this substance is in the unique ability to bind and hold water. One molecule of Hyaluronic Acid can bind up hundreds of water molecules, which allows it to be a kind of binding agent for connecting the skin cells and regulating intracellular metabolism. Thus, Hyaluronic Acid makes skin firm and elastic and effectively prevents aging. Besides that, Hyaluronic Acid can adapt to the weather conditions in accordance with humidity and regulate the level of water absorption.
Hyaluronic Acid use in cosmetics
Like the other substances in human body, Hyaluronic Acid is continuously produced by fibroblasts, a special kind of connective tissue. By the age of 20 their activity become lower and Hyaluronic Acid disintegration start to prevail over the generation and by the age of 30-40 these effects become obvious: skin become dry, rough, wrinkled. The negative factors like unhealthy diet, bad habits, UV-radiation etc. boost this process.
The Hyaluronic Acid cosmetic products are designed to restore the lack of this natural moisturizer and to sloe down aging. Creams, cosmetic masks, gels etc. perform the following list of functions:
- Provide skin with deep moisturizing and prevent the moisture evaporation;
- Soften and smoothen skin, heal chapping and cracking;
- Activates the skin protective functions;
- Fill in and smoothen wrinkles;
- Reduce inflammation and take care of skin;
- Help nourishing agents to get into deep skin layers.

The difference between Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Hyaluronate
The main disadvantage of Hyaluronic Acid is large molecular dimensions, that is impossible to cross the skin barrier, so Hyaluronic Acid is not used is creams but in injections and filers. The main alternative to the Hyaluronic Acid is Sodium Hyaluronate, which has much lower molecular dimensions and act the same way as Hyaluronic Acid does. Penetrating the skin depth, Sodium Hyaluronate encourage the synthesis of collagen, elastin and Hyaluronic Acid itself.
The Repharm company has created a series of Sodium Hyaluronate cosmetic products, which contains face and body creams, lip and eyelid balsams of different kinds. These products proved their efficiency in medical trials and in a practical use.
